Norwegian Cruise Lines has set up the Norwegian Dawn as a part of its distinctive Freestyle Cruising concept. The idea eschews scheduled dining times and rigid time tables, allowing passengers to eat when they wish and adopt a "resort casual" dress style that leads to a relaxed atmosphere. The Norwegian Dawn's amenities adhere to that central philosophy. Twelve separate restaurants and nine onboard nightclubs give passengers a great deal of flexibility, and many of the ship's other facilities, such as the gym and spa, are open around the clock.
The Norwegian Dawn is based in New York City, though Norwegian Cruise Lines schedules Caribbean voyages from Miami for it as well. As such, the ship's décor reflects the atmosphere of the Big Apple. The exterior is marked by the Statue of Liberty, and the onboard restaurants and nightclubs feature a wide variety of themes in imitation of the city's cosmopolitan nature. One of the Norwegian Dawn's biggest draws is an onboard art gallery, featuring original paintings by Monet, Van Gogh and Renoir. Cruises from New York include tours of Bermuda, northern voyages to the Bay of Fundy in Canada, and two-day "Dinner and Dance" cruises around New York City itself.
The New York base is further in keeping with Norwegian Cruise Lines' commitment to domestic tours focusing on North American waters. Reservations are easier to make with such a central locale, and travel to and from the departure port can be done much more simply.
