The Century was one of Celebrity's Solstice line of cruise ships, first launched in 1995 and undergoing a major refurbishment in 2006. It houses over 1,800 passengers, making it one of the larger ships in the Celebrity line. The upgrade added new suites and standard cabins, completely redesigned the onboard spa, and added new features such as a barber shop, a spa café and services for acupuncture and disability treatment.
Celebrity emphasizes high-end services as a hallmark on its cruise ships, especially the dining. The Century features a large two-story main dining room, the Grand, as well as a Casual Dining Boulevard offering more a la carte items. Onboard events stress an intimate environment, rather than a grand event. Wine tasting, onboard gambling, music and dancing, and other expected cruise fare is typical. The Century makes efforts to match the ship's events with the flavor of the particular cruise--for example, by playing Russian-themed movies such as "Dr. Zhivago" on the Baltic Sea tours.
The Century initially served on Celebrity's Caribbean circuit, and it still offers Caribbean cruises out of Miami. The bulk of its cruises are in Europe, however, ranging from Mediterranean and Moroccan excursions to tours of Norway and the Arctic Circle. Its departure points in Europe mean careful travel considerations for North American passengers. It's often advantageous to combine a cruise on the Celebrity Century with a larger tour package. Discounted tours and alternate travel options can be arranged through Direct Line Cruises.
